Guide
How to share links — and know who clicked
Sharing links looks trivial until a 200-character URL breaks in an email, or a campaign ends and nobody can say how much traffic it sent. This guide covers both problems: making links easier to share, and making them measurable.
1. Shorten before you share
Long URLs carry tracking parameters, session IDs, and path segments nobody reads. Shortening replaces all of it with one clean line that copy-pastes safely, fits any character limit, and can be changed later without reprinting anything. Start with the free link shortener or the long URL shortener for parameter-heavy links.
2. Match the format to the channel
Email and newsletters
Raw URLs wrap across lines and break in plain-text clients. A short link stays on one line and keeps the click data out of your ESP's black box. Give each campaign its own link so open-rate and click-rate stories match.
Social media posts
Character counts matter on X, and Instagram and TikTok only allow one link in the bio. Use one short link per post, plus a link-in-bio page for everything else.
WhatsApp, SMS and DMs
Messaging apps truncate long URLs and sometimes mangle query parameters. Short links preview cleanly and cost fewer SMS characters.
Print, slides and QR codes
Nobody types a 180-character URL off a poster. Pair a memorable custom slug with a QR code so both audiences — phone camera and keyboard — can reach the page.
3. Track every link you share
One link per channel turns guesswork into a table. Clicks, unique visitors, country, device, and referrer are recorded on every short link, and UTM tags carry the same campaign labels into GA4. See the link click tracker for what the report looks like.
4. Make links look like you
Recipients click links they recognise. A branded short link on your own domain measurably outperforms a generic one, and it keeps your brand in the URL when someone forwards the message. New to the mechanics? Read what a URL shortener actually does.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to share a long link?
Shorten it. A short link is one line of text, survives copy-paste in chat apps and printed material, does not wrap or break in email clients, and can be read out loud. Shortening also lets you track how many people actually clicked.
How do I track who clicked a shared link?
Share a tracked short link instead of the raw URL. Each click records timestamp, country, device type, and referrer, so you can see which channel — email, WhatsApp, Instagram, a slide deck — sent the traffic. Individual visitors are never personally identified.
Should I use a different link per channel?
Yes. Create one short link per channel or per post so the reports are comparable. UTM parameters do the same job inside GA4, and both can be applied to the same link.
Are short links safe to share with customers?
They are when the shortener is reputable and the destination is yours. Use a branded domain so recipients recognise the sender, avoid link chains that redirect several times, and set an expiry date on anything time-limited.
